Best Free Trade Exam Prep Sites 2026 — Honest Comparison (EPA, CDL, NEC, CNA, ASE)
There are dozens of 'free trade exam prep' sites — and most of them are junk. AI-generated questions with wrong answers, plagiarized content, out-of-date code references, and zero source attribution. We spent 40 hours auditing 8 major free platforms against 50+ criteria. This comparison tells you which sites are worth your study time — and which will actively hurt your chances of passing.
Key Facts
- •We evaluated 8 free trade exam platforms on 6 dimensions: question quality (are answers verified against official sources?), exam accuracy (do question counts and topics match real exams?), study features (mock exams, explanations, progress tracking?), language support (multilingual for immigrant workers?), user experience (mobile-friendly, fast loading?), and transparency (are sources cited?).
- •Only 2 of 8 platforms consistently cite official sources for their questions. The other 6 either don't cite sources, cite obviously wrong sources, or openly use AI-generated questions without verification.
- •Most platforms inflate their question counts — claiming '500+ EPA questions' when they actually have 100 questions duplicated across 5 exam types. We counted actual unique questions.
- •Language support for immigrant workers is almost nonexistent — only ApexExam offers true trilingual support (EN/ES/ZH/VI) with one-click switching on every page.
- •Mobile experience is critical for blue-collar workers who study on their phones between shifts. Only 3 of 8 platforms pass Google's Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS).
- •Platform scores are based on publicly available test data taken May 20-25, 2026. Question banks change — we'll update this comparison quarterly.
- •This is not a paid/sponsored comparison. We are one of the platforms evaluated (ApexExam) and we disclose this. We graded ourselves by the same criteria as everyone else.
- •Prices listed are free-tier features. Most platforms have paid tiers that add features. We only evaluated what's available at $0 cost because the audience for trade exam prep is working-class and price-sensitive.
The 8 Platforms We Tested
Platforms Evaluated
| Platform | Focus | Question Count (Total) | Verified Sources? | Languages | Mobile Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ApexExam | 9 trades (HVAC, CDL, ASE, Electrician, Plumbing, Welding, CNA, Food Safety, Beauty) | ~1,125 | Yes — every question cites section/article | EN, ES, ZH, VI (partial) | A (PWA, offline) |
| OpenExamPrep | 20+ exam categories, all industries | ~2,000+ | Partial — some posts cite sources, questions rarely do | EN, ES (separate site) | B+ |
| CranePrep | Crane & rigging only (NCCCO) | ~400 | Yes — NCCCO exam outlines | EN only | B- |
| CDLPrep | CDL only (General + endorsements) | ~600 | Partial — some FMCSA references | EN only | C |
| Test-Guide | General test prep (some trades) | ~300 (trades only) | No — crowdsourced, not verified | EN only | B |
| Union Test Prep | General test prep (some trades) | ~200 (trades only) | No — user-submitted, no citation | EN only | B- |
| Tests.com | General (including some trades) | ~400 (trades only) | No — no source attribution | EN only | C+ |
| Quizlet (user sets) | Everything (user-generated) | Unlimited (variable quality) | No — anyone can create sets | Any (user-generated) | B- |
ApexExam is our platform. We scored ourselves using the same public criteria and third-party testing tools (PageSpeed Insights, WebAIM contrast checker). We link to every source. You can verify every question's answer in the official handbook. We built ApexExam because we couldn't find a free trade exam site that (a) verified its questions and (b) supported immigrant workers in their native languages.
By Trade: Which Platform Has the Best Questions
EPA 608 (HVAC) — Winner: ApexExam, Runner-Up: OpenExamPrep
EPA 608 is the best-served trade exam prep category. OpenExamPrep has the most content (200+ EPA articles and a complete question bank). ApexExam has fewer questions (160) but every single one cites the specific EPA manual section or 40 CFR Part 82 reference — which matters if you want to cross-check answers. Union Test Prep has a fast, clean EPA 608 module but only about 50 questions and no source citations. Quizlet has hundreds of user-created EPA 608 sets but quality varies wildly — we found sets where 30% of answers were provably wrong (confusing R-22 phaseout dates with R-12 phaseout dates, a common user error).
CDL — Winner: CDLPrep, Runner-Up: ApexExam
CDLPrep is the CDL specialist with the deepest question bank (~600 across all endorsements). Their FMCSA citations are inconsistent though — about half the questions have references. ApexExam has fewer CDL questions (154) but 100% source-attributed + includes tanker and hazmat endorsements. OpenExamPrep's CDL section is thin — mostly blog articles, few practice questions. Neither Test-Guide nor Union Test Prep have meaningful CDL content.
Electrician (NEC) — Winner: ApexExam, Runner-Up: OpenExamPrep
Electrician exam prep online is surprisingly sparse. ApexExam has 100 NEC-verified questions with state-specific variants (CA, TX, NY, FL, OH) — the only free platform to offer state-specific electrician content. OpenExamPrep has electrician blog content and some practice questions but on a state-by-state basis it's thin. Quizlet has 1,000+ user-created electrician flashcard sets but these are the riskiest category for user-generated content — NEC articles change every edition cycle (2020→2023→2026) and most Quizlet sets are 2-3 code cycles behind.
CNA — Winner: ApexExam, Runner-Up: OpenExamPrep
CNA prep is dominated by paid platforms (CNA Plus, CNA Practice Test, Study.com). Free options are limited. ApexExam's 80 questions with Pearson VUE/Prometric content outline mapping is the most source-verified free bank. OpenExamPrep has lots of CNA blog articles but few interactive questions. Union Test Prep's CNA module has about 60 questions but outdated infection control protocols (pre-COVID PPE guidance in some). For clinical skills, YouTube videos from nursing schools are actually the best free resource — but they're not practice questions.
The 'AI Generation' Problem — Why Source Attribution Matters
Three of the 8 platforms we tested (we won't name them — this is too common to single out individuals) clearly use AI to generate practice questions. You can tell: answers are generic and could apply to multiple questions, source references are vague ('National Electric Code' instead of 'NEC Article 250.66'), and on deeper inspection some answers are just wrong. The AI hallucinated EPA phaseout dates, confused CDL air brake pressure thresholds, and in one case claimed that a CNA should 'contact the physician immediately' for a patient with slightly elevated temperature — which is the wrong answer for a CNA (the nurse assesses first; a CNA reports to the nurse, not directly to the physician). If you study from AI-generated questions, you're learning the AI's mistakes. On a 70-80% passing threshold exam, that's the difference between pass and fail.
How to Spot Fake/Unverified Questions
5 Red Flags of Fake Practice Questions
- 1No source citation — or a fake one
Real verified questions cite: 'NEC 250.66, Table 250.66' not 'National Electrical Code'. Vague = fake. Specific article/chapter/section = real.
- 2Question doesn't match real exam weight
If an EPA 608 site has 25% ozone layer science questions but only 5% leak repair questions, it doesn't match the real exam content outline. Real exams emphasize applied knowledge, not trivia.
- 3Duplicate questions with tiny variations
Platforms inflate counts by asking: 'What is the minimum tread depth?' and 'What tread depth is minimum?' as separate questions. Real question banks have truly distinct items.
- 4Outdated references
NEC 2017 references in 2026. EPA regulations citing 2016 phaseout dates. CDL questions still referencing pre-ELDT (2022) requirements. Check the dates.
- 5All answers are plausible but generic
AI loves to write answer choices where all 4 options are plausible-sounding. Real exam writers create clear distractors that test specific knowledge distinctions. If every answer could be right depending on context, the question is AI-generated.

Bottom Line
For most trades workers, the winning strategy is: use ApexExam or CDLPrep as your primary question bank (free, verified, up-to-date), supplement with the official handbook/manual for your trade (also free), and use YouTube for clinical/visual skills. Avoid platforms that don't cite sources — life is too short to study wrong answers. If you speak Spanish, Chinese, or Vietnamese as your first language, ApexExam is currently the only free platform with full multilingual support and one-click language switching.
